On December 19th, 1974, the first personal computer went on sale. It was called the Altair 8800, and it was invented by the Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS). The computer was sold as a kit through the Popular Electronics magazine. This magazine was widely read in the United States, and people quickly started buying the computer. By the end of the next year, five thousand Americans had the Altair 8800. A young man named Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen wrote the BASIC programming language for the computer. This became the basis for the future Microsoft Company. By the end of the 1970s, the Altair 8800 became very widespread in America, and in other parts of the globe too. The MITS had no idea that their computer would be so popular. Improvements to that computer have been made. In the past four decades, other brands of computers followed it. Today, virtually everyone has a personal computer.
